The short answer
The KeyFit 30 and the KeyFit Max are not the same seat, and the difference is height, not weight. Both run to 30 lb, but Chicco’s own comparison gives the KeyFit 30 a 30″ height limit and the KeyFit Max 32″ — two inches more growing room in the seat you’ll use for roughly a year. And Chicco sells three separate bases at three different prices, so “it fits a KeyFit” is not a safe assumption. Check which base your seat actually takes before you buy a spare.

The KeyFit line, and what actually differs
The names look interchangeable. The limits aren’t. These figures are Chicco’s own.

KeyFit 30 30 lb / 30″ and KeyFit Max 30 lb / 32″ are Chicco’s own comparison figures. KeyFit 35 is stated by Chicco as designed for infants 4–35 lb. Verified 30 September 2026.
The part that catches people out
There are three bases, not one
This is the single most common way to waste money on this system: buying a second base assuming they’re all the same.
| Base | Price tier | Note |
| KeyFit 35 Infant Car Seat Base | $$ not sold on its own | Only available bundled with the KeyFit 35 seat — there is no standalone base listing to buy. |
| KeyFit Infant Car Seat Base | $$ dearer of the two | The dearer of the two bases sold separately — it fits the older KeyFit carriers, which is why it costs more than the Max base. Check price on Amazon |
| KeyFit Max Infant Car Seat Base | $$ cheaper of the two | The cheaper of the two bases sold separately. If you are choosing on price alone, this is the one. Check price on Amazon |
Three products, three prices, three SKUs. The safe reading is that they are not interchangeable — and that “it fits a KeyFit” is not something to act on when the money is on the line. Match the base to the exact seat model you own.
If you’re buying a second base for a second car — the usual reason — buy it by the seat’s full name, not by “KeyFit”. And check the date on it: bases expire, and the rules are the same ones that apply to the seat itself.
Before you buy
Is the KeyFit 35 discontinued?
One thing to know about the KeyFit 35: Chicco no longer lists the 35 seat in its current infant range — the KeyFit Max and KeyFit Max Zip have taken its place. The base is still sold on its own, which is why the name is still around, but if you are buying new, the 35 is not the seat to plan around. Check what is actually in stock before you commit to a system.
Two inches of height is the whole decision
An infant seat rear-faces until the child outgrows it — and the limit that arrives first is usually height, not weight.
30″
KeyFit 30
A child at the 50th percentile reaches 30 inches at roughly 15–18 months.
32″
KeyFit Max
Roughly two to three more months of rear-facing in the same seat.
35 lb
KeyFit 35
Goes past the 30 lb wall the other two hit — the longest life of the four.
Will it fit your car?
KeyFit width, and whether three fit across
The KeyFit family is one of the narrower infant seat ranges, which is why it comes up so often in three-across questions.
| Seat | Width | 3 across | Source note |
| Chicco KeyFit Max ClearTex |
16.5–17.0″ |
~50″ |
The two sources disagree — see below |
| Graco SnugRide SnugFit DLX | 17.5″ | 52.5″ | — |
| UPPAbaby Aria V2 | 17.0″ | 51.0″ | — |
| Nuna PIPA RX | 17.5″ | 52.5″ | — |
On the KeyFit Max I show a range rather than a number, because Chicco’s own page says 17.0″ and their retail product data says 16.5″. When two sources disagree I show both rather than pick the flattering one — and the calculator uses the smaller figure, because over-stating a width is the error that costs you money.

Common questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do the Chicco KeyFit and KeyFit 30 use the same base?
Chicco sells three separate infant car seat bases — for the KeyFit, the KeyFit 35 and the KeyFit Max — at three different prices. That is the clearest signal that they are not interchangeable. Match the base to the exact seat model rather than assuming any KeyFit base fits any KeyFit seat.
Q: What's the difference between the KeyFit 30 and the KeyFit Max?
Height, not weight. Both rear-face to 30 lb, but Chicco gives the KeyFit 30 a 30-inch height limit and the KeyFit Max a 32-inch limit. That is roughly two to three extra months of rear-facing, and since height is usually the limit that arrives first, the Max typically lasts longer.
Q: Can you interchange car seat bases?
Not between different seat models, and not between brands. A base is engineered for the specific seat it locks into, and the lockout is a safety feature rather than an inconvenience. Use only the base that matches your seat, and never mix a Chicco seat with another brand's base.
Q: Does the Chicco KeyFit 30 base expire?
Yes. Bases carry an expiry date just as seats do, and it is usually printed on a label on the underside of the base rather than the seat. Federal safety standards contain no expiry clause — service life is the manufacturer's own policy — so the date on the base is the one to follow. Check it before buying a used base, and see our guide to car seat and base expiration for how to read the label.
Q: How long can a baby stay in a Chicco KeyFit 30?
Until they reach whichever limit comes first: 30 lb, or 30 inches tall — and in practice it is almost always height. A child on the 50th percentile hits 30 inches somewhere around 15 to 18 months. The test most manufacturers use is to seat your child and check the gap between the top of their head and the top of the seat shell: under one inch and they have outgrown it.
Q: Which strollers are compatible with Chicco KeyFit seats?
Many strollers accept Chicco infant seats, but almost always through a model-specific adapter rather than out of the box — and the adapter is usually sold separately by the stroller brand, not by Chicco. Check the stroller maker's own compatibility list for your exact stroller model and year, because adapter fit changes between model years and a discontinued adapter is easy to buy by mistake.
Width decides whether three seats fit across your bench; depth decides how far a rear-facing seat pushes your front passenger forward. Both are answerable against your own measurements with the car seat fit calculator.
If you’re deciding between this and another infant seat, the KeyFit 30 review covers the installation and the harness. And if you’re travelling with a stroller too, the stroller carry-on size checker answers whether yours fits an overhead bin.
